 A Brief Explanation of some of the terms used in this Blog.

Amma: (n) Mother in the Tamil Language .
Appa: (n) Father in the Tamil Language

Bites: My father's term for snacks for drinks e.g Spicy Briased Liver or Chilli Bites

Braised: Amma's description of cooking onions and chilli powder.

Curry: The term curry is used in the same context as is on the Indian Sub continent and by the Indian Diaspora. It is a pungent sauce. In the South African Context the term curry is preceded by the name of the main ingredients e.g meat or vegetable resulting in  names like Chicken Curry or Pumpkin Curry.

Durban: The largest city on the east coast of the Republic of South Africa- home to Amma (1942-1967) and the largest 's South African of Indian origin' population within the Republic of South Africa.

Gravy : term for sauce  or liquid like component of a curry

Gulab Jamun: Indian Donut made with Semolina and condensed Milk then dipped in a rose water syrup.

Phutu: A maize dish of African origin. It is cooked form a porridge like consistency to form grainy lumps. It is often eaten withe vegetable curries or as  my sisters love it ...with sour milk.

Samp: Another African Dish (Umngqusho in Zulu). Made from mealie Kernels the samp has to be boiled together with beans  then mixed with fried onion, chilli and cumin.

Vegan: does not contain any animal products or by products i.e no animal fat, eggs, or milk, cheese, curds made form animal products.

Vegetarian: does not contain any meat products including eggs or animal fat but may include milk and or butter products.
