    Indian Sweet Cookery Book Review

    Several readers requested more sweetmeat recipes just before Diwali 2011. Unfortunately I was unable to find most ingredients needed to make popular Diwali Sweets. I will make up for this next Diwali. In preparation I have been looking into a few books about Sweet Making. Unfortunately there is a limited selection of books on the subject of Indian Sweetmeats. One of the most widely known is Indian Sweet Cookery by Jack Santa Maria.

    Since its first publication in 1961 Indian Delights by the Women’s Cultural Group, has retained pole position as the most comprehensive guide to Indian Food in South Africa. One could argue, the reason for this claim to  fame is that it is the only book in publication covering this topic. Despite the criticism Indian Delights is worthy of merit-be it the only  book on the subject of South African Indian Food or not. Filled with recipes and anecdotes, the book also covers home remedies and healthy eating ,topics which South Africans of Indian Origin can relate to- but also has global appeal with its simple  instruction of recipes.

    I have never felt the need to buy a cookbook-especially not one about Indian cooking since I often rely on the same intuitive techniques of cooking used by Amma- but as the readership of this Blog has grown- beyond my expectations-I would like to provide readers with quality information and tips for the effective preparation of food. My very first Cookbook on review is titled Traditional Indian Cooking in South Africa by Ramola Parbhoo . I received this book 2 weeks ago and have not yet tried any of the recipes but have just finished reading it.
