How To Make Oats Taste Better
On Most Saturdays Amma would make warm oats or mealie meal porridge. I preferred my porridge sweet with milk and sugar while Amma and my sisters preferred Chutney.
This warm Granola recipe was inspired by Amma’s oat porridge and my husband’s method of preparing oats. I love oats porridge but I sometimes find it too messy-especially since I often cook mine in a microwave and it ends up spilling.
This 'Granola' like recipe definitely makes oats taste better and is very simple-using just a few basic ingredients, if not just plain oats. You can also add raisins, nuts or chopped fruit. Most store bought Granola contains excess sugar and other additives. Making your own gives you control over what ingredients to use and if you are counting calories you can also use appropriate ingredients. This recipe serves 2 people.
- ½ cup oats
- 1 teaspoon honey (optional)
- Plain yogurt (or desired flavour)
- Optional: you can also add raisins, coconut or chopped fruit)
2. Add honey. Mix so the oats don’t burn.

3. Place in a serving bowl. Top with yogurt. Serve.

Avocado and Pomegranate on Toast
One of my favourite breakfasts is toast with avocado instead of butter. We used to make avocado sandwiches as kids, often from the bags of avo' we got from family who had avocado trees in their garden. Pomegranate on the other hand was enjoyed without bread in childhood, we had a large tree in the neighborhood and I loved picking them. They add surprising crunch to toast and pair perfectly with avocado.
